Academic Degree Options

Associate of Science Degree (A.S.)

  • Two-year degree
  • Transfer to four-year college after WVNCC
  • General Studies Degree

The Associate of Science (A.S.) Degree is the award conferred on students who wish to transfer to a four-year institution and pursue a Bachelor’s Degree (B.S. or B.A.).

Associate in Arts Degree (A.A.)

  • Two-year degree
  • Transfer to 4 year college after WVNCC
  • General Studies Degree

The Associate of Arts (A.A.) Degree is a broad-based curriculum grounded in the liberal arts. This course of study is appropriate for a student planning to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree (B.S. or B.A.).

Associate of Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.)

  • Two-year degree
  • Go directly into workforce after WVNCC
  • Some classes may transfer to four-year college
  • Various specialized degrees

The Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree is the award conferred on students who wish to complete two years of education at WVNCC and then enter the workforce. While many courses taken in an A.A.S. degree program may transfer to four-year institutions, the degree is not designed as a transfer degree.

Certificate of Applied Science (C.A.S.)

  • One-year training certificate
  • Specific occupational skills certificates

The certificate is the award conferred on students who wish to train or retrain in a specific field or skill and enter or re-enter the workplace with a new or more advanced skill set. Some certificate programs may transfer to a two-year program leading to an Associate in Applied Science Degree.
