Upward Bound
WHAT IS UPWARD BOUND?
West Virginia Northern’s Upward Bound program is a federally funded TRIO program. Upward Bound is designed to provide high school students with the skills and motivation they need to pursue postsecondary education.
Upward Bound participants receive a variety of services designed to help them prepare for college. These services include: college visits, Saturday College sessions, Summer Academy program, 2 times per month academic counseling at the high schools, tutoring services, and so much more.
WHO CAN JOIN?
Any student enrolled in a target high school and has a desire to attend college (2 year or 4 year). The target schools are: Buckeye Local High School, Edison Local High School, Indian Creek High School, Steubenville High School, Toronto High School, or attending the Jefferson County JVS. Additionally, the student may qualify if they are a first-generation college student (neither parent has a bachelor’s degree) OR their family is considered to be of low income based on federal guidelines.
WHAT FREE SERVICES WILL BE AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS?
- ACT/SAT preparation, registration help, and fee waivers
- Tutoring sessions on campus and/or Zoom tutoring services.
- 6 Monthly Saturday College sessions
- FAFSA workshops for seniors.
- Community service activities
- Career exploration
- Scholarship Seminars
- Visits to college and university campuses
- Overnight visits on college campuses.
- Academic and personal guidance
- A six-week Summer Academy program
- Summer Bridge Program for graduating seniors who are going on to a college or university
- Earn $40-$60 stipends for attending Summer Academy & Saturday College
- Cultural and educational field trips
- College application fee waivers
- Recreational and cultural opportunities
- Family involvement & much more!
