WVNCC’s B&O Building being restored thanks to State Legislative support

West Virginia Northern Community College (WVNCC) is pleased to announce that, thanks to the support of the West Virginia Legislators, funds were allocated to higher education institutions for deferred maintenance projects. Among the selected projects, the Community & Technical College System of West Virginia has chosen the B&O Building for much-needed restoration work.       

The restoration project, which has started, will encompass all sides of the B&O Building. Restoration efforts will focus on granite, limestone, brick, terra cotta, cast iron, and wood windows. Additionally, new fiberglass cornices (the decorative molding that originally crowned the building) and a marquee canopy at the main entrance will be added, restoring some of the building’s original architectural elements. Construction on the French renaissance building started in 1906, however due to a major flood in 1907, construction was delayed. The building officially opened on September 3, 1908, and was home to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad train station until 1962. The State purchased the building in 1975 for the College, which was outgrowing its current space in the Hazel Atlas Building.

“We deeply appreciate the WV Legislators for their commitment to preserving one of the state’s most iconic buildings,” said WVNCC President Dr. Daniel Mosser. “We are extremely proud of our history and eagerly look forward to the restoration of the B&O Building.”

The project is expected to last approximately 10-11 months and the College will be updating the community as the project progresses.
